What is a salary hike?

A salary hike, or increment, is a permanent increase in your pay. It is usually quoted as a percentage of your current salary, for example a 10% hike, or as a fixed amount. Appraisals, promotions and job changes are the usual reasons for one.

How to calculate your new salary

Increase = Current salary × Hike % ÷ 100
New salary = Current salary + Increase
Example. Current salary ₹6,00,000 with a 10% hike. Increase = 6,00,000 × 10 ÷ 100 = ₹60,000. New salary = ₹6,60,000.

How to calculate your hike percentage

Hike % = (New salary − Current salary) ÷ Current salary × 100
Example. Current salary ₹7,20,000 and new salary ₹8,10,000. Increase = ₹90,000. Hike = 90,000 ÷ 7,20,000 × 100 = 12.5%.

Things to check before you compare offers

  • Compare like with like. CTC to CTC, or in-hand to in-hand. Mixing them gives a misleading percentage.
  • A bigger CTC is not always a bigger take-home. Provident fund, tax and other deductions change with the salary structure.
  • Look at variable pay. A hike on fixed pay and a hike including a bonus are very different numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a salary hike percentage?

Subtract your old salary from your new salary, divide the result by your old salary, and multiply by 100.

How do I calculate my new salary after a hike?

Multiply your current salary by the hike percentage divided by 100 to get the increase, then add the increase to your current salary.

Should I compare CTC to CTC or in-hand to in-hand?

Compare the same figure on both sides. A hike calculated on CTC does not mean your monthly take-home rises by the same percentage, because tax, provident fund and other deductions also change.

Can a hike percentage be negative?

Yes. If the new salary is lower than the old one, the result is a negative percentage, which is a pay cut.
